Swilly's Caramel-Oatmeal Bars

32 caramels
2 T. butter
3/4 c. heavy cream
1 1/2 c. flour
2 1/4 c. rolled oats
1 c. light brown sugar
3/4 t. baking soda
1/4 t. salt
1 c. + 2 T. unsalted butter
1 1/2 c. walnuts

Melt caramels with cream in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir and set aside to cool. Combine the rest of the ingredients and press slightly more than half the mixture into a buttered 11" x 13" pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove pan from oven and sprinkle with nuts, then pour over caramel "sauce". Sprinkle remaining crumbly mixture over the top. Bake 15-20 minutes longer, until golden brown. Cut into bars after it has cooled.
